That the City Council go on record extending its thanks to Mothers Out Front and standing with them in the effort to raise awareness and shine the light on the problem of gas leaks and to educate our community on the importance of sealing these leaks for our safety and for the preservation of our environment.

WHEREAS:

Mothers Out Front was founded in Cambridge in 2013 and has grown to 400 members since that time; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Mothers Out Front has expanded throughout Massachusetts and into New York and Virginia and has become a powerful force in battling the negative impacts of climate change by encouraging thoughtful and progressive initiatives and legislation; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Mothers Out Front, Cambridge is currently partnering with City of Cambridge Departments to advocate for the repair of natural gas leaks due to cracks in old gas pipes; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

There are over 20,000 gas leaks in Massachusetts, 231 of which are identified as leaks in Cambridge; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Natural gas contains 95% methane which is 84 times more damaging to our environment than carbon dioxide, causes damage to trees, and poses the risk of exploding; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Mothers Out Front will launch the Raise a Stink Gas Leaks Campaign which, between May 2nd and May 11th, 2016, will strive to identify gas leaks in Cambridge by tying ribbons where leaks exist; now therefore be it

 

 

RESOLVED:

That the City Council go on record extending its thanks to Mothers Out Front and standing with them in the effort to raise awareness and shine the light on the problem of gas leaks and to educate our community on the importance of sealing these leaks for our safety and for the preservation of our environment; and be it further

 

 

RESOLVED:

That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to Mothers Out Front on behalf of the entire City Council.
