WHEREAS:

The conflict in Syria has resulted in the death of thousands of innocent civilians, the dislocation of millions more, and the destruction of priceless antiquities; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

While the international community of states has drawn lines in the sand which it cannot or will not enforce, non-profit organizations like the Syrian American Medical Society have stepped-in to fill the void left by the inaction of the international community; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) a non-profit, non-political, educational and humanitarian organization made up of medical professionals of Syrian descent; and its members are medical professionals, mostly of Syrian descent; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

The Syrian American Medical Society operates 106 medical facilities in Syria that provide general and specialized medical care for Syrians in need and Syrian American Medical Society also provides primary and more specialized care to thousands of Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

The Syrian American Medical Society operates the largest medical facility for Syrian refugees, the Za’atari Camp located in Jordan. SAMS’s members lead frequent medical missions to volunteer their skills for refugees; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

The Syrian American Medical Society will be hosting a concert: Songs for Syria A Concert for Humanitarian Relief to raise funds to support its work with Syrian refugees on Sunday, November 13, 2016, from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM, in the Old South Church located at 645 Boylston Street in Boston; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

The Syrian American Medical Society hopes the fundraising event will help to raise community awareness of their, highlight the struggle of the Syrian people they serve, and provide a place for community healing and hope to those in the Boston area deeply connected to Syrians everywhere; now therefore be it


 

 

RESOLVED:

That the Cambridge City Council go on record offering its support and best
wishes for a successful fundraising event to the Syrian American Medical Society; be it further

 

 

RESOLVED:

That the City Clerk be and is hereby requested to send a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the Syrian American Medical Society on behalf of the entire City Council.
