WHEREAS:

It is with great sadness that the City Council learned of the passing of long-time Cambridge resident, Maurice Lee Anderson; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

A retired employee of the Federal Government and veteran of the United States Army, Maurice Lee Anderson attended the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and nurtured a life-long interest in learning by traveling extensively around the globe; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Maurice was a teacher at the United South End Settlements Center, which works to building a strong community by improving the education, health, safety and economic security of low-income individuals and families in the Boston metropolis; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Maurice was a gifted writer and served as editor for many noted writers. Maurice felt strongly that the written word was a vehicle to document, empower, unify and mobilize communities; to this extent, Maurice was a founder of the Cambridge Writers of Color Workshop in the Cambridge Public Library; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

A long-time volunteer in the Citywide Senior Center in Cambridge, Maurice will be remembered for his dedicated service in the computer lab, and for a generosity of spirit expressed in personalized poems he wrote with great joy and compassion for members of the center; and

 

 

WHEREAS:

Maurice Lee Anderson’s passing will leave an irreplaceable void in the hearts of many, including his nephew Ronald Spence, niece Charlita Baker and close friends Florence Grant and Philip Robinson; now therefore be it

 

 

RESOLVED:

That this City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Maurice Lee Anderson at this time of such personal loss; and be it further


 

 

RESOLVED:

That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the family of Maurice Lee Anderson on behalf of the entire City Council.
